The Sounds of Intent project has a number of future objectives and aspirations.

If trials confirm that the model and the prototype software are of potential value in assessing children's musical development, in indicating ‘what next’ in developmental terms and as a source of materials for teaching and learning, a pilot CD/DVD based version (followed by an internet version) should be developed for testing in the field. Such software would additionally permit networking and the exchange of information between fellow professionals, parents and other interested parties. It would facilitate the gathering of substantially more data, enabling the model to be verified and if necessary refined. An expanding bank of teaching resources would become more widely available.

It is intended that the findings from Sounds of Intent should facilitate the evolution of the ‘P’-levels for music and, through its grounded approach, provide a methodology for the general development of the ‘P’-level framework.

It is anticipated that the type of computer interface for profiling and assessment of pupil attainment and progress that is being developed as part of the Sounds of Intent project may have broader educational application at other levels and in different subject areas.

Future work is planned that would link the PMLD music-developmental model to the domain of SLD and beyond.

Further research with the model is planned that would indicate how to use music effectively to promote wider development of children and young people with PMLD or SLD.
